In this quote, I think the speaker means that literature basically brightens up life. If there was no literature life wouldn't be as full. It adds to life in general, makes everything better. It makes our lives better than they already are.
This quote relates to the book I'm reading by putting me in Mary's shoes. Everyone thinks she is ugly with her thin face and body, and thin light hair. Her mom and dad got really sick, and died. I think reading makes you feel how it is in someones shoes.
